Summary

This program is read by author and two-time Grammy-nominated agent provocateur, John Waters。 The doyen of deviance and depravity narrates his hilarious novel with masterly skill。

A filthy, uproarious, outrageous audiobook from the brilliant and twisted mind of John Waters, the filmmaker of Hairspray and national bestselling author of Mr。 Know-It-All

Marsha Sprinkle is a liar。 And a thief。 And a terrible, terrible mother。 And she loves every minute of it。

For the first time, the Sultan of Sleaze and the Baron of Bad taste has turned to fiction, and the result is Liarmouth, a riotous, ridiculous, perfectly perverted tale of sex, crime, and revenge。 Marsha is on the run from everyone and everything: her lustful ex-assistant; her estranged daughter, backed up by a whirling cult of trampoline-obsessed oddballs; her mother, an animal plastic surgeon hoping to nip and tuck pets across America; and every cop in a hundred-mile radius。 But is that enough to take down Marsha Sprinkle?

John Waters is one-of-a-kind, and Liarmouth is no different。 The iconic filmmaker, actor, writer and visual artist has now added “novelist” to his resume, and the rest of us couldn’t be luckier。

A gentleman’s three—realistically a shade or two lower。 I love you John but this read like a slog。

BRAVO ! BRAVO ! BRAVO !。what a rollercoaster of feelings I felt with this one but mostly, I was cackling。 。 Honestly, some of the obnoxious scenes reminded me of humor skits in RuPaul's All Stars (not to be confused with Dragrace, I am speaking about the legends , okay?)。 sidebar: the last sentence is a compliment, btw。。。Im being bias (again) because this book takes place in New England (other than the few chapters involving Baltimore)。 Also, I was just in Provincetown last week and I loved BRAVO ! It is John Waters! So, somewhat raunchy, and yet not as bad as it could have been。。。。but then again, rimming is not something most folks are familiar with! It was a fun and wonderful ride。

I made more than halfway through this one, but again, life's just too short。 Way too much bouncing, which you'll see if you do decide to read this。 I made more than halfway through this one, but again, life's just too short。 Way too much bouncing, which you'll see if you do decide to read this。 。。。more

After renting Pink Flamingos from the BK Public Library a few years ago (because I couldn't find it anywhere else; now, of course, it's on Criterion) I was hooked on his movies。 Egg man!! Egg man!! I love John Waters and am one of those annoying people that can quote most of his films from start to finish and take great pleasure in doing so。 His essays are highly entertaining and beautifully written, perfect capsules of Waters's wit, taste, and intellect。 Naturally, I snapped up "Liarmouth" the day it was issued and dove right into it, figuring I'd finish it within a day or 2。 That day or 2 turned into about 10 days because I kept putting the book down。 The twisted alleys of Waters's mind I love John Waters and am one of those annoying people that can quote most of his films from start to finish and take great pleasure in doing so。 His essays are highly entertaining and beautifully written, perfect capsules of Waters's wit, taste, and intellect。 Naturally, I snapped up "Liarmouth" the day it was issued and dove right into it, figuring I'd finish it within a day or 2。 That day or 2 turned into about 10 days because I kept putting the book down。 The twisted alleys of Waters's mind are on full display, and I couldn't help hearing his voice as I read, as though I were actually listening to an audiobook。 The obvious glee he felt writing this book is evident in every line。 I could hear him laughing as I read particularly absurd passages。 Unlike his films, which stick to a 90-minute rule and barrel by so fast it's necessary to see them multiple times just to absorb everything he's crammed into them, a novel only goes as fast one chooses to read it。 In this instance I think an audiobook might actually have been the way to go, because after reading a single chapter, I'd find that I'd had plenty for one sitting。Waters revels in writing about completely unlikable people and I can't think of anyone in this novel that is remotely likable。 It's not that no character in this story is nice, or normal, or relatable。 They're all rather revolting and it took effort as a reader to try to picture them the way Waters might have as he wrote them。 Ultimately, I couldn't root for anyone in the story and found that I didn't care what happened to any of the characters one way or the other。 While I laughed out loud at lines of dialogue here and there, hearing them coming out of Waters's mouth with an exaggerated Baltimore accent, I didn't laugh at the story because I didn't find it funny。 Entertaining? Yes, entertaining enough to keep reading。 Funny? Not really。Unlike his films, in which half the fun is the casting, costuming, dialogue, and sight gags, we have only Waters's words to entertain us here。 Had I heard him telling this story, I'm sure I'd have laughed with him, swept up in his enthusiasm for these ridiculous characters and a plot line that only he could invent。 In the end, though, I was glad to finish the book so I could move on to something else。 Hey, at least it's fairly short。 。。。more

Haven't had a book make me laugh out loud so many times as this profanely fun novel。 All the reasons why I treasure Waters can be found in this sentence。 Even now as I reflect on the Bouncers, the penis with a mind of its own and the despicable but likable lead character, I not only smile, but laugh。 Haven't had a book make me laugh out loud so many times as this profanely fun novel。 All the reasons why I treasure Waters can be found in this sentence。 Even now as I reflect on the Bouncers, the penis with a mind of its own and the despicable but likable lead character, I not only smile, but laugh。 。。。more

This was the first novel I needed to read… luggage thieves, tickle-fetishists, a talking penis, a half-man/half-dog, cultist, bouncers, and just plain crazy fun。 I loved it。Not for the weak of humour。

An incredibly entertaining book but one that isn’t quite able to connect it’s word-play and anarchic plot with the same sort of punch that John Water’s movies are able to achieve。 I don’t know, maybe it’s a medium is the message type thing, but the visual depravity of Water’s films always felt rebellious in a very pointed and subversive way, while Liarmouth often felt content with a comic style over any type of substance。 Not that I didn’t enjoy it or think that Water’s comic style wasn’t insane An incredibly entertaining book but one that isn’t quite able to connect it’s word-play and anarchic plot with the same sort of punch that John Water’s movies are able to achieve。 I don’t know, maybe it’s a medium is the message type thing, but the visual depravity of Water’s films always felt rebellious in a very pointed and subversive way, while Liarmouth often felt content with a comic style over any type of substance。 Not that I didn’t enjoy it or think that Water’s comic style wasn’t insanely readable。 It just left me a little wanting by the end。 。。。more

This was what I wanted from a book written and read by John Waters, I could not ask for anything more or better。 The ending was just amazing!

I wasn't sure I'd follow through with this-- I was honestly afraid to even listen to it with headphones in a public space lest it accidentally played out loud, it's that filthy-- but it's been a rough couple weeks in the world and I just needed something raucous and wild。 Waters narrates this and you can hear how much fun he's having。 And his writing is top notch! So, I can't recommend this to just anyone but if you decide to get on this train, hold on and have fun。 Happy Pride! I have read a few of John Waters' books and liked them。 His last one didn't do much for me, but I was eager to check this book out since this was his first official NOVEL。 I didn't know what to expect, but I ended up liking it。 Yes, it is crude and raunchy。 But if you like John Waters, you should like that, right? Some reviewers said it lacked humor, but I found that after getting over the shock of some parts, there was plenty of humor in it。 It felt very fast-paced。 It does jump back and forth I have read a few of John Waters' books and liked them。 His last one didn't do much for me, but I was eager to check this book out since this was his first official NOVEL。 I didn't know what to expect, but I ended up liking it。 Yes, it is crude and raunchy。 But if you like John Waters, you should like that, right? This book is absurd

Kaylee Krogstad

Even knowing the gross & chaotic nature of the stories that have come from John Waters’s mind- this got a bit tired by about hour 4 of the audiobook。 It’s difficult to enjoy the plot when all characters are so highly unlikeable and every moment is filled with something “shocking”。

Christa Van

Marsha Sprinkle and Daryl are a consummate “confidence game” couple。 They grift all over, grabbing bags at the airport, lying, stealing and cheating without prejudice even targeting family or anyone who shows them kindness。 Marcia’s daughter Poppy and her entourage of trampoline “acrobatic fanatics” have been ripped off once too often and are out for revenge。 Every scene in this chase tale is over-the-top and delightfully distasteful。

Thomas Lowe

I love me some John Waters, but, wow, was this a slog。

Audiobook。 Loved it。 It felt like John Waters, written by Waters and read by Waters。

Nothing better that a book that grabs you right in the beginning and never let’s go。 Liarmouth delivered。 The characters were just amazing and interesting! The scenarios going on were things I might never imagine but am now glad to think about。 Sometimes I try to visualize what I’m reading。 In this story the visuals made me think I could be tripping on some good mushrooms or something- but I wasn’t- just crazy, amazing writing。 Great escape novel is how I might list it。

Jen

It is John Waters。 That is all。
